Installing an EV charger isn’t a plug-and-play job — it’s an electrical circuit that draws sustained high current for hours at a stretch, so getting the sequence right matters. Here’s exactly how the process works, from checking your electrical capacity to switching the charger on for the first time.
A certified electrician checks your sanctioned load — the maximum power your DISCOM has approved, shown on your electricity bill in kW or kVA. A 7.4 kW charger stacks on top of your existing load from fridges, ACs, and lighting, so as a rule of thumb, you want roughly 8–10 kW of sanctioned load to run it comfortably. If your sanction is too low, apply for a load enhancement with your DISCOM before installation proceeds — most states now offer fast-track processing for EV-related upgrades.
Match the charger’s output to your vehicle’s onboard AC charging capacity — a charger rated higher than your car can accept just wastes money. Most Indian EVs use a Type 2 AC connector; common ratings are 16A/3.3 kW for smaller batteries or limited load, and 32A/7.4 kW for mid-size and larger EVs. Go with a BIS-certified unit, ideally with an app for scheduling and monitoring. Setting up a charging station itself is delicensed, but the electrical connection still needs DISCOM sign-off.

Choose a spot close to your parking bay, shielded from rain, with the unit mounted 1.2–1.5 metres above the floor on a solid brick or concrete wall. For outdoor installs, use an IP65-rated charger with weatherproof, conduit-protected cable runs. The electrician then runs cable from the distribution board to the mounting point, connects it to the charger’s terminals, and seals all outdoor connections against moisture — typically 2–5 hours for a straightforward home install.
